The Practice of Transcendental Meditation
The Settling of the Mind

Research shows that when this state of deep mental rest is achieved during meditation that the behaviour of the brain changes in very significant ways;
Changes to the Brain During TM
- Increased blood/oxygen flow to the brain
- Increased Coherence as shown by EEG (Electroencephalographic) studies
- Greater Integration between the two hemispheres of the brain
- Increased Responsiveness of the brain

This study found that during the practice of Transcendental Meditation some of the early sensory components of the brain’s response to somatosensory stimulation (0-100msec) are more widely distributed across the cortex. This study by Dr. Nicolai Nicolaevich Lyubinov, Director of the Moscow Brain Research Institute’s Laboratory of Neurocybernetics, indicates that during the practice of Transcendental Meditation there is an increase in the areas of the cortex taking part in perception of specific information and an increase in the functional relationship between the two hemispheres of the brain.
The Resting of the Body
A Unique State of Deep Physiological Rest
As the mind becomes still, so too does the body, which very quickly enters into a state of deep rest and relaxation. A unique state of deep physical rest is achieved, research findings include:
Changes to the Body During TM
- Lower Respiratory Rate
- Lower Heart Rate
- Increased Muscle Relaxation
- Reduced Plasma Cortisol (the stress hormone) in the blood
- Reduced Plasma Lactate
- Reduced Skin Conductance (a test for relaxation)
